Under Ukrainian law, a buyer has the right to exchange or return a purchased item within 14 days if:

— the item does not meet the quality standards specified by the manufacturer.

— the item fully meets all requirements but, for some reason, does not satisfy the buyer.


     Specialists from the Consumer Protection Department of the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast remind consumers of the basic rules that allow them to get a refund or exchange a product.


      To get a refund or exchange a product, the consumer must have a receipt (either a cash register receipt or a sales receipt). 


     According to Article 9 of the Law of Ukraine “On Consumer Protection,” goods of satisfactory quality may be exchanged if the payment document issued to the consumer along with the purchased goods has been retained. The receipt serves as the basis for exchanging or returning the goods and as proof that you purchased the goods at that specific store.


     Make sure that no more than 14 days have passed since the purchase.


     A consumer has the right to exchange goods of satisfactory quality within fourteen days, not counting the day of purchase, unless a longer period is specified by the seller (Article 9 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Protection of Consumer Rights”). The last day on which you can request a refund and return a product of satisfactory quality is the 14th day of the period that began the day after the purchase.


     Check the product to ensure it retains its original appearance and is free of signs of wear or damage.

A product of acceptable quality may be exchanged for a similar product provided that it has not been used and retains its marketable appearance, consumer properties, seals, and labels, and if, at the time of exchange, a similar product is not available for sale, the consumer has the right either to purchase any other products from the available assortment with a corresponding price adjustment, or to terminate the contract and receive a refund equal to the value of the returned product, or to exchange the product for a similar one as soon as the corresponding product becomes available for sale.


     The money paid for the goods is refunded to the consumer on the day the contract is terminated, and if it is not possible to refund the money on the day the contract is terminated—at another time as agreed by the parties, but no later than within 7 days.


     Please note: if, for example, you bought a dress or shoes and used them on the very first day, and then realized that the size doesn’t fit or you don’t like the color, it is no longer possible to return such items, since there will be signs of wear—albeit minor but still noticeable—which automatically classifies the item as “used.” If, however, the item turns out to be of substandard quality, it can only be exchanged under warranty.
